The Gardner Betts library is an organic project that is dependent on the work
of librarians from the Austin Public Library and a dedicated Gardner Betts
teacher. Weekly activities at Gardner Betts include:
Maintenance
This includes maintaining the appearance of the library as well as organizing the shelves, placing new
materials on the shelves, and determining which non-circulating materials might need to be removed from
the collection to allow for more efficient use of space.
Book Talks
Teenagers often struggle with determining what they might like to read. We provide book talks to promote
and discuss new books and older high-interest books. These book talks often prompt teens to discuss
books that they have enjoyed from the library.
Reader's Advisory
If book talks are the macro-level, then reader"s advisory is at the micro-level. Reader's advisory
is a unique experience in which a librarian and a teen have a conversation intended to elucidate the
teen"s interest and what he or she is looking for in a book. This is a unique experience not only
because it helps the teen to secure a book of interest, but also because it requires the teen to vocalize
and construct his or her interests and discuss that with another person. The librarian will ask the teen
"Describe the types of stories and conflicts you enjoy in a book?" rather than simple yes/no answerable
questions.
Reader's advisory is also beneficial to the participating librarians as it enables them to better
understand the teens at Gardner Betts and assists them in developing a library that truly and accurately
reflects what teens want and need.
